The neighborhood matters, but according to research, so do the neighbors. More than half of American’s say they’ve experienced “nightmare neighbors.” A new survey from Ally Financial says that because of that, more than three quarters of those surveyed say that neighbors will be a factor in their next home purchase.

Some key factors of being a good neighbor? Taking good care of their home, being willing to help, being friendly and taking care of the neighborhood. Topping the list for the least favorite qualities, being loud, taking part in questionable activities (like an illegal business), being nosy and not keeping up with the house.

Younger generations say they’ve had more bad experiences with neighbors than older generations. 63% of millennials and 38% of boomers. Also, according to the survey, people with kids report having more unpleasant experiences than those without kids.
