Rich was born and raised in Grovetown, GA and graduated from Greenbrier High School where he excelled in baseball (he was a 2006 State Champion and only player to be all county for 4 years). He continued his academic and athletic career at the University of Georgia where he holds 12 current baseball records and was a 2008 and 2009 All American.
